The documentary Food, Connecting Lives

Overview

A documentary without narration, filmed over approximately three months in Ishioka, Ibaraki, in summer 2018, following people who hope to change society through food.

01

About

Rather than a simple record of daily life, the film seeks a layered, book-like structure that carefully portrays people’s inner lives and preserves the atmosphere of each place. It received an ISHIOKA FILM COMPETITION AWARD in 2018. The work was transferred to Ishioka City and is used for local education and community promotion.

02

Approach

Repeated visits and interviews with local residents produced extensive material, which I transcribed and structured for documentary storytelling. With unnecessary staging kept to a minimum, the edit embraces simplicity while combining observation and documentation.

03

Theme

The film focuses on everyday life and the universal act of sustaining ourselves through food and other lives. It documents the relationship between the local environment, climate, and people’s ventures into organic farming and dairy production.
